Manchester Giants will open the new season with a special We Love Manchester exhibition match against USA Select on Sunday September 3 (5pm).

As has been the case in recent seasons, the USA Select team will visit the Trafford Sportsdome to give the Giants a real test in the build-up to the new BBL campaign.

This year’s match will carry extra significance, as it will act as a fundraiser for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, set up following the Manchester Arena bombing in May.

There will be donation buckets on the day, special t-shirts to be bought with all proceeds going to the fund, while the club will also donate all revenue from Chuck-a-Duck.

The Giants vest for the 2017/18 season will also feature a “We Love Mcr” band across one of the shoulders.

Sean Kilmartin, USA Select Team Manager, said: “The powerful spirit of Manchester is recognized all over the world. It is not just the historic competitiveness of their sports, but their strength of character, pride, uniqueness and compassion.

“It has become both a highlight and an honour for USA Select Basketball to have such a strong relationship with the remarkable people of Manchester. We love Manchester!”

The match will be the first game in charge for new coach Danny Byrne, appointed at the end of last season.

It will be the first chance to see the new Giants squad in action ahead of the BBL season, which is due to begin on September 29th.

Tickets for the USA Select game are available to buy online now, at the usual prices – Adult £12, Concession £9, Junior £5, Family £30 (booking fee applies).

Brevard grad pursues ‘opportunity of a lifetime’

Brevard grad pursues ‘opportunity of a lifetime’

July 15, 2017 | JAY EDWARDS | Charlotte Observer

Miles Leathers couldn’t have dreamed of a better finish to his college basketball career.

Playing in his final game at Brevard College on senior day, the former East Mecklenburg High standout found his team tied 82-82 with rival Newberry College, and 4.7 seconds to play.

Leathers hauled in an 85-foot pass, between two defenders, from junior guard Stevie Williams and made the game-winning, left-handed layup with 3.3 seconds to play. Brevard won 84-82.

“The play call was great, it was almost like a Hail Mary and just go get it,” Leathers said. “Stevie made a great pass and all I had to do was finish. After I made the layup, the feeling was just surreal and it’s still hard to believe that was the last play of my college basketball career. It still doesn’t seem real.

“Just watching the video of that play still gives me chills, watching the crowd, my teammates and even my own reaction.”

Leathers, 22, said the postgame celebration was emotional as he tried to balance the jubilation of his game-winning shot with the realization that it was the last time he would wear his No. 5, Brevard basketball jersey.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard/forward also knew it could be the last organized, team basketball of his life.

“Those final moments were very emotional, because I knew that could have been the last basket of my basketball career,” Leathers said. “I remember thinking, no matter what, the Brevard basketball chapter of my life was over.”

Leathers went on to graduate from Brevard College with a degree in exercise science on April 30. That day, he was supposed to be at a regional tryout for the USA Select Basketball team, but he chose the graduation ceremony.

THOSE FINAL MOMENTS WERE VERY EMOTIONAL, BECAUSE I KNEW THAT COULD HAVE BEEN THE LAST BASKET OF MY BASKETBALL CAREER. I REMEMBER THINKING, NO MATTER WHAT, THE BREVARD BASKETBALL CHAPTER OF MY LIFE WAS OVER.

Miles Leathers

Still, the USA Select basketball organizers invited him to the team’s European Exposure tryouts on June 10-12 at Carolina Courts in Indian Trail.

While more than 100 college basketball players from all over the country tried out, only 30 made the team. Leathers was one one of the players, and now is preparing to spend most of September overseas playing in a series of games against professional teams from England, Ireland, Norway and other countries.

Leathers also will be exposed to dozens of professional coaches, general managers and scouts.

“I’m really happy that Miles made the USA Select Basketball team and is starting to get some of the recognition he deserves,” said Lee Burgess, who coached Leathers all four years at Brevard “He is one of those guys that has always played in the shadows. What he accomplished at Brevard speaks for itself. But I feel like he can play at the professional level and he’s now got a great chance to prove it.”

Leathers will be in good hands under head coach and general manager, Sean Kilmartin.

Kilmartin was in a similar position in his own basketball career. After starring at Appalachian State for coach Bobby Cremins, Kilmartin went on to play professional in Europe for three seasons, with stints in England, Ireland and Spain.

For the last 18 years with USA Select Basketball, Kilmartin has helped hundreds of players land professional basketball careers. Leathers hopes to be the next success story.

“When I got to college I never expected to even have a chance to play professional basketball,” Leathers said. “So, now that this opportunity has come along, it’s just a blessing that I’m going to try to make the most of in every game. I’ve been a player that people have doubted all my life, so I just have to prove myself again.

“My focus is to play well enough to fulfill my dreams of playing professional basketball. The fact that the chance to play pro basketball is attainable, it just drives me even more.”

Leathers has made a habit of proving himself.

He started at East Mecklenburg, where he transformed from a “skinny role player,” into a first team, all-Southwestern 4A conference player, according to former East Meck coach, Jason Grube.

Leathers did it again at Division II Brevard College, which was the only team to offer him a scholarship.

At Brevard, Leathers contributed all four years. As a senior, he averaged 16 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game. He finished as the school’s all-time leader in assists (252), steals (170) and is tied for the school mark in rebounds (596). Leathers also scored 1,265 points, making him the only Brevard player to ever score more than 1,000 points, grab more than 500 rebounds, dish out more than 200 assist and nab more than 100 steals.

“Miles has always been the type of player that relishes the underdog role and will do whatever it takes to win games,” Grube said. “He’s been proving people wrong at every level. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him do it again now and thrive at the professional level.”

Leathers is working on his game this summer as he juggles basketball with his full-time job as camp counselor in North Carolina A&T’s outward bound program. He spends most of his weekends at home in South Charlotte with his parents, Randall and Evelyn Leathers.

He will go to USA Select basketball training camp the last week of August, before heading to Europe the first week of September.

“I never imagined that basketball could be my job and I could get paid for it,” Leathers said. “So, when I go to Europe, I’m looking at it as the opportunity of a lifetime. My goal is to keep playing basketball, no matter where it takes me.”

With 11 awards up for grabs, only 6 of the accolades went to divisional winners as teams and fans alike took performance into account alongside results. There is also recognition for 11 well deserving coaches who have led their teams admirably this year.

In_The_News-2-USAFirstYearPro-thAfter receiving the top vote from 5 different D1M clubs, Team Northumbria’s Malcolm Smith capped a regular season to remember as the Clarksville, Tennessee native added MVP honours to a D1M league winners medal. National League announce MVP and Coach of the Year winners

Thursday, April 20, 2017 3:19:00 PM

The National League is delighted to announce the winners of this year’s Spalding NBL MVP Awards and Coach of the Year Awards 2016/17. With a tremendous level of interaction from National League clubs to have their say as well as over 4,300 NBL fans voting to swing the awards in their team’s favour, this season’s MVP race has been the biggest in NBL history! With 11 awards up for grabs, only 6 of the accolades went to divisional winners as teams and fans alike took performance into account alongside results. There is also recognition for 11 well deserving coaches who have led their teams admirably this year.

After receiving the top vote from 5 different D1M clubs, Team Northumbria’s Malcolm Smith capped a regular season to remember as the Clarksville, Tennessee native added MVP honours to a D1M league winners medal. The American has been integral to his side’s fortunes this term and despite being unable to convert the league title into a successful playoff run, Smith can still be proud of his efforts this year. Reading big man Chris Hooper came 2nd in the MVP race, unable to secure enough votes from D1M clubs to match Smith’s final total despite taking the fan vote. Manchester’s Stefan Gill was a narrow 3rd.

The D1W vote was a significantly more clear cut affair as American guard Ekemini Essien took the award by a landslide. A standout talent for Team Solent Kestrels all season, the 23-year-old received the most votes from D1W clubs as well as taking the fan vote by a considerable distance. With the Kestrels putting together a 19-1 season to win the league title, the were also National Cup runners up and will take a shot at playoff glory this weekend when they match up with rivals Southwark Pride in Manchester. Regardless of the outcome of that game, Essien has been integral to her side this season and is a worthy recipient of the D1W award. Fellow Kestrel Jodi Jerram wasn’t a popular choice for NBL fans but received a number of selections from fellow clubs to come 2nd, with Bristol Academy Flyers’ Amani Clark rounding out the top 3.

Despite taking to the court for this weekend’s D2M Playoff Final, neither Kent nor Thames Valley were able to push a player into the final MVP conversation this season. In the most tightly contested award across the NBL, Team Newcastle’s Richard Austin narrowly edged fellow American Charlton Jones to claim the honours. After collecting an impressive 308 fan votes, Jones nearly managed to bring the award back to Tees Valley but Austin’s superior favour amongst D2M clubs swung things his way. After helping his side to a 19-3 record before losing out to eventual league winners Kent on the final day of the regular season, Austin has lifted Team Newcastle throughout the year. He also has a Patrons Cup winners medal to add to this season’s MVP award.

As two dominant forces during the regular season in D2W, it’s no surprise to see University of Nottingham and Oxford Brookes players collecting MVP honours. Nottingham’s Gabriela Bronson and Oxford’s Courtney Gray were both unanimous selections amongst their peers and have been recognised for their individual efforts.

Although they were beaten to the D3 North title by Team Birmingham Elite, University of Chester won’t finish the season empty handed after veteran Phil Brandreth picked up the MVP award. Joining him from the South is Oxford Brookes’ Abdoulaye Sylla who impressed teams throughout the campaign despite Oxford finishing the season with a 5-13 record.

In D4 North, a single vote separated Manchester Giants II pair Daniel Pilkington and Josh Houghton but ultimately it was the former Liverpool man Pilkington who scooped the award after the Giants won their division at 17-1. With Northants Tauras claiming the D4 Midlands title before booking a place in the Playoff Finals, it’s no surprise the MVP winner comes from their roster. In this case its Arnas Maziliauskas and the 25-year-old would love to add post season success to an MVP award.

After impressing at last summer’s U18 European Championships, Lewisham’s Josh Edwards has transferred international success onto the domestic stage to help Lewisham to a solid 12-6 record this season. The future is clearly bright for Edwards and this MVP award will be further evidence that the 17-year-old is a significant talent. Rounding out the winners is Lewis Tucker who managed to help Cardiff City to a 12-4 record in D4 South West. Averaging a touch over 27PPG, Tucker’s output was integral to the Welsh side’s success.

With Spalding NBL Coach of the Year honours also up for grabs, Team Northumbria made it 2 for 2 in D1M as Head Coach Marc Steutel was recognised by his peers as the best coach in the division. With the North East side securing the league title on the back of a 10 game winning streak to end the regular season, it’s hard to argue that Steutel didn’t get the best out of his team.

Southwark’s Jackson Gibbons was able to prevent Team Solent from making it a clean sweep in D1W as the popular coach can now add this accolade to a National Cup winners medal for the season. With his side getting prepared to line up in the Playoff Final this weekend, that could potentially land the 37-year-old a deserved trio of silverware for the year. After securing 5th place in D2M, London Westside’s Sam Stiller was also handed a Coach of the Year award. Overseeing the development of starlet Kayne Henry-McCalla, Stiller is clearly getting the best not only from Henry-McCalla but the rest of his roster as well.

It’s a repeat in D2W as University of Nottingham and Oxford Brookes University follow up MVP honours with Coach of the Year awards as well. Andrea Congreaves is recognised for guiding Nottingham to a 15-1 division win and a spot in the Playoff Final, whilst Zach Meekings receives the nod for topping the South division with Oxford Brookes.

Team Birmingham’s Steve Hansell and Southwark’s Sterling Muschett both collect awards in D3, with Danny Byrne from Manchester Giants II, Ross Norfolk from Essex Blades, Darijus Maldutis from Northants Tauras and Aaron Ebos from Cardiff City rounding out the D4 winners.

PRESS RELEASE

Hemel Storm 87 – Team Solent Kestrels 94

In_The_News-3-storm-mime-attachmentHemel Storm were unable to build on last week’s win as Solent Kestrels recovered from a 13 point deficit to claim their second victory over Storm this season.

It was an electric atmosphere at Sportspace on Saturday evening as American import, USA Select Basketball product Khapri Alston, made his debut for the Vanarama-sponsored Storm. Big things were expected from the 6’5″ forward from Chicago and the home fans were not disappointed.

But it was Hemel’s home grown talent that sparked an early lead. Nick Allin replaced Nik Rhodes in the opening line-up due to Rhodes’ absence on compassionate grounds and the Hemel youngster orchestrated several fast breaks finished by Michael Darlow and Leon Henry.

Six minutes into the game Alston entered the fray for the first time and it wasn’t long before he used his significant frame to move several defenders out of the way and converted his first layup.

Solent’s response came from their own American import, Marquis Mathis, who ended the quarter with eight points and kept his team within one point at 18-17.

Storm seized the initiative in the second quarter with Leon Henry scoring 14 of his 18 points and a stubborn defence forced Solent into eight turnovers. The lead reached 13 points but a couple of three pointers from Kestrels’ guard Caylin Raftopoulos helped reduce the deficit to 8 points at half time.

In the second half Khapri Alston showcased the talent and sheer strength that had earned him an impressive list of accolades in his college career at Midwestern State University. The USA Select program has produced many all star players over the years, Alston may be another in that long line of players. At times Alston drew the attention of four Solent defenders but was still able to score with finesse. But the scoring from the rest of the team was sporadic and Kestrels eased their way back into the game.

Three more quick 3 pointers from Raftopoulos gave Solent the lead. A brief cameo from returning fans’ favourite Simon ‘Spud’ Kearney could not stem the tide and Solent claimed a seven point win.

Coach David Allin said: “Obviously, we didn’t get the result we wanted but I was really impressed with Khapri’s contribution. He will just get better and better as he gets used to the English game. He gives us different options around the hoop and is a real handful for anyone to defend,”

Storm’s team and scorers: Alston 25, Henry 18, Darlow 16, Yeboah 10, Burnell 7, Adorian 5, Mumuni 4, Josey 2, Allin, Duru, Kearney, Rodwell

Storm are at Sportspace again on Saturday (4th February) when the visitors are Essex Leopards.
Tip-off 7pm. Tickets at www.stormbasketball.net

SENIOR MEN TO TAKE ON TEAM USA SELECT!

SENIOR MEN TO TAKE ON TEAM USA SELECT!

SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 | Garreth Lodge

City of Edinburgh Kings, one of the country’s premier basketball teams are set to face off against a team of touring players from across the United States in a pre-season friendly at Portobello High School on Sunday 18th September.

The United States touring team will feature players who have recently graduated from playing college basketball in the States and who are hoping to possibly secure themselves a professional contract in Europe for next season.

The Kings have strengthened in the off-season with many former players returning to the team this year, and they will be coached by Craig Nicol who has stepped up from his role as assistant coach for the previous two seasons.

Alistair MacKay is returning after a brief professional spell in Italy. Prior to that Ali spent five years at Davidson College. Many will recognise Davidson as the basketball powerhouse who produced Steph Curry the reigning two-time NBA MVP.

Scottish International Calum Nicol, who played his junior basketball with Kings returns after captaining the Glasgow University side for the past few seasons.

Ali and Calum will suit up alongside Simon Flockhart, the Kings stalwart who returns after one year playing for his father in law at Falkirk Fury.

This will add significant size to the Kings squad who are looking to get back to the top of the Scottish game this year.

New Senior Men Head Coach Craig Nicol said:

“We are delighted to welcome this team from the USA to Edinburgh; they will provide a real test to our team ahead of the season starting in a few weeks.

“Welcoming back Ali, Callum and Simon is a huge boost for us going into this season where we will be looking to win all three competitions.

“We have lost two of the country’s top juniors from last year in Kyle Jimenez and Konrad Kantorski as they head of to academies in England but they go with our best wishes and we have a wealth of experience in the backcourt with Craig Reilly, Paddy Campbell and Garreth Lodge.”

Team USA Select made their way to Ellesmere Port Catholic High for the first ever Cheshire Brewers Summer Shakedown tournament and left victorious.

Caernarfon Celts, Chester University, Mold Magic, Deeside Dragons, Oswestry Wizards, two Cheshire Brewers teams (Spartans and Vikings) and the assembled US college players went head to head in a packed Catholic High gym.

Both Brewers teams, Team USA and Chester University fought their way to the semi-finals where unfortunately for the hosts, both the Spartans – reigning Wirral League champions – and the Vikings were eliminated.

Eventually a hard-fought final saw Team USA write their names into history as the inaugural Brewers Summer Shakedown champions 2016.

The tournament will return in 2017 so keep visiting this site for all the details.
