REVENGE FOR USA SELECT

REVENGE FOR USA SELECT

September 4, 2017

Leevett Leopards came up short in the final period as they went down 71-62 against Team USA Select Blues at the In_The_News-1-aj-v-tusa-200x300 Brentwood Centre, on Sunday,
The Big Cats led for almost all of the first three periods but were outscored 27-18 in the final period as the visitors chalked up the victory.
AJ Roberts came off In_The_News-2-kevin.tusa_-300x200the bench to lead the Big Cats with 18 points, while Roben Saiz Colon battled foul trouble all game to finish with 12 points in 20 minutes of action. Kevin Moyo added seven points, five assists and four rebounds while Jamie Hayes struggled with his shot, shooting one from nine, but finished with nine rebounds, three assists and a steal.
A Team USA side who were considerably stronger than the White side Leopards had faced on Friday were led by Isaac Lyerly-Pina with 17 points, including a couple of big treys down the stretch, and seven rebounds.
In_The_News-4-tusa-300x200Leopards started strongly and six straight Siaz Colon points – four off of fast breaks and two free-throws – gave them an early 6-1 lead before scores from Roberts and Jamie Rodwell made it 10-4.
Roberts turned provider with the assist for Hayes to make it 17-4, and Saiz Colon sent Leopards into the first break with a 23-11 lead.
In_The_News-3-rodwell-v-tusa-150x150Only a Kevin Moyo free-throw troubled the scorers for Leopards in the first third of the season period as their lead was trimmed to four, but Roberts drained a trey and Wes Moore scored on the break to make it a nine point game at the midway stage of the stanza.
An 8-2 run from the visitors cut the lead back down to three before Will Ashby hit a jump shot to give Leopards a 33-28 half-time lead.
Shaq Lewis converted a three point play to extend the lead to eight at the start of the second half before Ashby made it a ten-point game.
The proved to be as good as it got for the home side as back-to-back treys launched an 8-0 run before Roberts made the score 42-38 with 4:37 on the clock.
In_The_News-5-shaq-v-tusa-150x150Lyerly-Pina levelled the score for the first time since with 2:04 on the clock before Lohr gave the visitors their first lead of the game, only to see hit a jump shot to send the teams into the final break tied at 44.
Collins restored USA’s lead before Roberts hit back-to-back jump shots to put Leopards 48-46 ahead, and Kevin Moyo scored to make it 51-49 two minutes into the fourth period.
That proved to be Leopards’ final lead of the game as Coles scored from the Land of Plenty as a 15-4 run effectively sealed the game.
Scores from Lewes and Saiz Colon gave Leopards hope as they made it a five point game with 2:37 on the clock but the visitors then hit five straight points to wrap things up.

Manchester Giants go down to USA Select but there’s no need to panic

Manchester Giants go down to USA Select but there’s no need to panic

September 4, 2017 | ANTHONY JEPSON

Coach Danny Byrne took positives from his side’s opening pre-season game in front of a sell-out crowd.

There’s plenty more to come from Manchester Giants following their pre-season opener.

A disjointed second half followed a positive first as the Giants went down 78-64 to the travelling USA Select squad.

But with two new signings still to come and David Kadiri gamely turning out after a 5am arrival from the States, coach Danny Byrne has reason to be positive.

Kadiri, a wiry, athletic 6ft 8ins presence, showed a few understandable signs of rustiness but enough awareness, vision and determination to indicate he can be a force at both ends of the court this season.

He scored eight points and took 13 rebounds.

And with explosive swingman Austin Rettig still to land from the US and British big man Clayfell Harris recovering from a minor injury, Byrne feels the Giants are in decent shape.

“We played well for 25 minutes and then a bit a tiredness crept in and our offence broke down a bit,” he said.

“You can see the chemistry is coming and it’s better than last season. There’s a lot to work on.

“David was straight off a flight and we obviously haven’t practised with him, but we can see what he’ll bring offensively and defensively he’ll protect that ring.

“Three quarters we were great. That last quarter tiredness crept in and shots wouldn’t drop.”

The Giants took the first half 41-36 and looked slick and structured when moving the ball quickly and breaking on the Americans.

They struggled when the US team pressed them in the second and some wayward passing saw things unravel somewhat.

The Giants have the chance to iron out some of the glitches when they play the Americans – a collection of US college graduates looking to showcase their skills – again behind closed doors on Tuesday.

“By the end of September we’ll be ready to go,” said Bryrne.
